The Wizard's Chamber · The story

The Headmaster’s sanctum, one hour before the siege

The Sorcerers of the Dark Side want to live forever. The recipe they need is hidden somewhere in the Headmaster’s sanctum, and your class of young witches and wizards has one hour to find it and destroy it before they storm the castle.

In short: In The Wizard's Chamber, dark sorcerers hunting eternal life are closing on a castle where the formula for an immortality elixir is hidden. The Headmaster sends a class of students into his sanctum to uncover its secret and wipe it out within the hour.

Not every practitioner of magic uses the gift for good. A circle of dark magicians, the Sorcerers of the Dark Side, has spent years chasing the one thing magic has never granted anyone: a life without end.

With immortality they could wield their power unchecked, in the hidden realm of magic and in the ordinary world beyond it. Only one obstacle stands between them and the prize: the formula for an immortality elixir, kept in the private sanctum of the castle’s Headmaster.

Tonight the sorcerers are coming for it. Their forces are gathering at the castle walls, and the Headmaster has chosen a handful of students to slip into the sanctum ahead of them.

Your orders are simple to say and hard to carry out. Unravel the mystery of the elixir, find the formula, and obliterate it so no one can ever brew it again. Succeed and your class becomes the sworn guardians of the potion.

Fail, and what follows is too grim to picture. The walls will hold for sixty minutes. Not one more.

Guard the potion, or watch the world pay.

What to expect

Stone walls, potion shelves and a forbidden book

The Wizard's Chamber is built as a corner of a working castle of magic: candlelit stone, a map of the grounds, shelves of stoppered bottles and a grimoire nobody should open lightly. It is welcoming enough for a first escape and tricky enough to keep experienced teams on their toes.

  • An original wizarding story with no franchise knowledge needed
  • Clues hide in plain sight; joining them up is the trick
  • No crawling, no confined spaces, no smoke effects
  • Difficulty 6 out of 10, with gamesmaster hints on request

How the sanctum was made

Escape This wrote the Headmaster, the dark sorcerers and the elixir from scratch, so The Wizard's Chamber borrows from no book or film. The team then built the castle walls, lanterns and potion shelves themselves before installing the room in Perth CBD and, later, as a fresh build in Sydney CBD.

The story isn’t finished: Escape This says a Wizard's Chamber sequel is being built in its factory. Its wider wizarding world also includes Magic School at Manly and Magic University in Melbourne, separate rooms with stories of their own.

Robes, cloaks and capes, a pointed hat, round spectacles or a lightning-bolt scar drawn on with eyeliner: anything that makes you look like a student of the castle helps. Wear closed shoes under the robes.

FAQ

About the sanctum and its secret

What happens inside The Wizard's Chamber, the castle-of-magic escape room?

The Wizard's Chamber is a 60-minute adventure escape room by Escape This, set in the candlelit sanctum of a castle’s Headmaster. Your team plays students sent to uncover the secret of an immortality elixir and destroy its formula before the Sorcerers of the Dark Side break in. It plays at Escape This Perth CBD and Sydney CBD, and a Brisbane CBD castle is set to open in the first half of 2027.

Who are the Sorcerers of the Dark Side?

They are the villains of The Wizard's Chamber: dark magicians hunting for immortality by any means, so they can use their powers unchecked in the magic realm and the ordinary world alike. While your class searches the Headmaster’s sanctum, they are massing at the castle walls.

Why destroy the immortality formula instead of guarding it?

Because whatever stays in The Wizard's Chamber can be taken once the dark sorcerers get inside. The job has two halves: work out the elixir’s secret, then obliterate the formula so nobody can ever brew it. Manage both and your class is named guardian of the potion.

Is The Wizard's Chamber a Harry Potter escape room?

No. The Wizard's Chamber has an original story and isn’t licensed from any book or film, so nobody needs to know a famous boy wizard’s spells to escape. Fans of Harry Potter, Gandalf, Merlin or Hocus Pocus still find plenty to love among the castle maps, potions and candlelight.

What happens if the sorcerers reach the sanctum first?

In the story of The Wizard's Chamber, failure means a fate too dark to describe, for magic folk and ordinary people alike. In real life the hour simply ends, a gamesmaster opens the door, and you get a few minutes afterwards to catch your breath and debrief.

What will we find inside The Wizard's Chamber?

The official footage of The Wizard's Chamber shows a castle map marking the library, chapel and study hall, a patterned chessboard, shelves of potion bottles, lantern-lit stone walls, a frog in a glass terrarium and a book titled The Dark Grimoire. Working out what each one is for is up to your class.
